Paying Attention to Conference...

I LOVE conference weekends! For many reasons. Being in Spring and Fall, the relaxed atmosphere of watching church on T.V, and of course, being able to listen to our Prophet. I know, I have talked about this before.

Sometimes we try different things to get our kids to pay attention to conference, or at least not bug us while we are trying to listen. One of the staples we have used is conference bingo. The kids have bingo cards with different topics. When they hear the topic discussed they place a cheerio on it. When they fill a row, they get a bingo.

This time it back fired a little. You see, Mitchell is a very involved kid. When he is doing something, he does it whole heartedly.

He was thus engaged while President Monson was speaking. He was telling a very sad story. He was talking about a woman and her family traveling from Prussia to Germany at the end of World War 2. Her husband had died in battle. Then her 3 year old was first to die on the arduous journey. Then her 7 year old. Next her 5 year old. Finally when she had nearly reached her destination she lost her baby. Just picture this.

As President monson was speaking about how horrible she felt after losing her whole family (and the rest of us are close to tears) :

You hear Mitchell yell, "YES! he said family!"

You see, he had finally gotten a bingo. But was he really paying attention to conference?I wonder.....

12 people know I love comments!:

That is so funny. I bet he was listening, even though bingo was a little more exciting at the time.

It would be pretty hard to be eight and not get that bingo! You'll have to have him read it later.

We do the bingo thing, and because of it my children look forward to conference. I remember one time, they all had their bingo cards out, they were sitting in front of the tv, and they were waiting for the program to start ... then, we found out that our cable company dropped it and it wouldn't be shown anymore. They were so sad and disappointed! Too cute.

Anyway, as they have grown up with this, it has made them able to listen sometimes to some of the talks. Anneli loved Elder Worthlin's talk last October, and it broke her heart when he died. It was so sweet, and it made me feel good, because when I was a kid, I didn't pay attention to ANY of it!

I actually cried during that story. Grant kept looking at me like I was crazy, but I could just put myself in her shoes. Then seeing the Prophet with a tear rolling down his cheak just made me lose it.

I bet that was a funny moment. I don't thinnk I truly payed attention until I was like 15 so if he's at least getting something right now I would be proud =0)

I have often wondered about the whole bingo thing...but I am hoping Kimball can play it in October, so I can pay attention!

Wondering if kids are listening at church/conference makes me think of the talk Gladys Knight gave at Womens conference (her conversion story) where she talks about going to church with her grand kids, and she says *that even though they are playing and doing their coloring, I still believe the words that are spoken are getting through* and I do believe that too.

I love that story, both! I know the kids are listening even when it doesn't look like it. Conrad was about the same age as Mitchell, playing lego's. I knew he wasn't listening, until dinner, He commented on 2 or 3 of the talks. That's when i knew it was ok to "play" during conference.
BTW- we now have "Movie parties" popcorn, sodas, candy, the works. It's a lot of fun and the kids get into it. They are all teenagers so food is always a good thing. :)

That is so funny! Ar least you know he heard something. I figure if they at least listen they will hopefully take one thing that they will need in the future.
